COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka started towing a completely stacked supertanker that had burst into flames off its east coast after it started floating towards land, a representative for the naval force of the Indian Ocean country said on Friday.

The fire was all the while seething on the New Diamond big hauler conveying around 2 million barrels of oil, said the representative, Captain Indika de Silva. There were 23 group ready, one of whom is assumed dead. The rest have been removed the boat by the Sri Lankan naval force, with one harmed team part traveled to the capital Colombo for treatment.

There were no indications of an oil spill from the vessel, de Silva included. Boats from the Russian naval force and the Indian coastguard have been aiding the firefighting.

The fire that broke out in the motor room of the New Diamond on Thursday morning had spread to the scaffold of the boat, contracted by Indian Oil Corp (IOC), however it still can't seem to arrive at the freight territory, the Sri Lankan naval force said.

At first, the boat was abandoned 38 km (24 miles) east of the Sri Lankan town of Thirukovil, however floated inside 25 km of the coast in the wake of being surrendered. Specialists were currently towing it toward the east, away from the coast, de Silva said.

Thirukovil is a town in Sri Lanka's Ampara area that was severely battered by the 2004 Indian Ocean torrent. Arugam Bay, a widely acclaimed riding spot, is close by.

"The missing Filipino mariner is assumed dead. He was severely harmed when a kettle detonated," de Silva told Reuters, refering to group who were saved.

"There were 5 Greek and 18 Philippine nationals among the team. One of them was harmed and he was transported out of the boat and the rest were represented."

While there are no indications of a hole, Sri Lanka's meteorology office has just displayed the effect of 70,000 tons of raw petroleum - a fourth of the boat's load - spilling into the sea.
